One of the great frustrations of my childhood was the scarcity of books. At my one-room rural school, one cabinet contained all the books for extracurricular reading for grades one through eight. Today if you have an e-reader, a smart phone, a tablet, or a computer, you can access thousands of books online.

The online bookstores sell many inexpensive e-books. Some other websites, such as Project Gutenberg, offer free copies of books on which copyright has expired. Many libraries now lend new books as e-books.
By the end of third grade, I’d read all the books in that file cabinet. I still prefer to read on paper, but I thrill to the idea of being able to carry a lifetime’s supply of books in a little electronic box.
